Eagles down, Naughts win 34-10

Winning against cross-town rivals, the George Jenkins Eagles 34-10, the Naughts advance to a 6-0 record. “As a team we did well, defense stood up and only let them have ten points,” senior wide receiver, Damon Black said.
GJ started out strong, running the ball 58-yards to score on their first possession when their Geddes Willis broke through the line to score, putting the Eagles ahead, 0-7 with 9:10 left on the clock for the first quarter. Lakeland would quickly retaliate, when Xavier Spann connected with Aaron Johnson on a 30-yard pass to score with 6:07 left in the quarter to tie up the game 7-7. Lakeland would gain another touchdown with 43.7 seconds left in the first quarter when Anthony Davis completed a 25-yard run to put the Naughts in the lead, 14-7.
GJ would complete a field goal on their first possession of the of the second quarter with 10:10 left in the half to shorten the Naughts lead to 14-10 where it would stand until the half. “We started off slow like normal, but we’ve been able to pick it up,” offensive lineman, Caleb Flath said.
Lakeland scored on their first possession of the second half when Ra’Don Dwight completed the Naughts drive with a half-yard touchdown run with 7:42 left in the third quarter to give advance the Naughts to a score of 21-10.
Lakeland would score two more times in the fourth quarter. Once when Dwight completed another half-yard touchdown with 8:49 left in the game giving the Naughts the lead 27-10. Davis completed a 62-yard run, which helped Randy Bates to score on an eight-yard run establishing the Naughts final touchdown with 4:44 left in the game to set the score at 34-10.
After several weeks out with a knee injury that followed an ankle injury taking him out of play, Buzz Williams, senior middle linebacker returned to the field tonight, “My knee felt pretty good, and I think I did pretty well…we started out pretty slow, but we put it together the second half and we shut them down,” Williams said.
Lakeland will move on to play their Homecoming match up against Ft. Lauderdale’s Flying L’s next week. “I just have to stay in the game and keep my head focused,” Homecoming Court candidate, Black said, “I want to win.”
