Southward has Record Night

Lakeland beats Miami Hialeah Lakes High School 16-10 in a nail biting homecoming match up. “Can’t take any team lightly, you have to take every game like it’s your last,” said Riquan Southward who caught 12 passes for a total of 238-yards for the night. Both stats are new Dreadnaught single-game records, eclipsing the old record set in 1991.

All scoring got started with Hialeah’s first possession in the game, taking the opening kickoff down the field where defense held them to a 22-yard field goal with 4:14 remaining on the clock. Midway through the second quarter, Lakeland drove the ball from the HHS 36 for a 5-yard touchdown run by Braxton Huggins to bring the score to 7-3 where the score remained until after the half.

Hialeah showed that they came to play yet again late in the third quarter when they completed a 30 yard pass to score with 2:48 on the clock, bringing the game to 7-10. Lakeland trailed Hialeah until the fourth quarter when Raheeme Dumas completed a 7-yard pass to Southward for the touchdown with 9:48 remaining in the game, giving the Naughts the lead 14-10. Jalen Stevenson sacked the quarterback on a 4^th and 25 attempt by Hialeah for a safety with 1:37 remaining in the game, closing out all scoring 16-10. “Don’t give up and play together as a team,” Stevenson said.

Dumas was 13 for 15 for 253-yards. Lakeland ended the night with 300 total yards on offense, giving up 279 to Hialeah. Kicker Caleb Hough came off an injury and went 2 for 2 on extra point attempts for the night.

Lakeland travels to George Jenkins next week for a district game. “We’re excited to play GJ to see what they bring to the table,” Huggins said.
