Naughts Give Lake Region First District Loss
By Jordan Thurn

“It was a great game, everyone executed their jobs and it was a great overall team effort,” said Jonathon Niblack of Lakelands 55-14 victory over Lake Region.

Scoring got started with 7:06 left in the first quarter when Ricquan Southward made a 47-yard carry to bring the Naughts to 6-0 after a failed two-point conversion.  Lake Region came together on a 3rd and 5 scramble to give them the lead 6-7.  With 11:15 remaining in the second quarter Lakeland would change the board again. Braxton Huggins got the touchdown on a 2-yard carry, which was followed by a 2-point conversion completed by Taylor Placides.  With the score now 14-7, Raheeme Dumas scored on a 3rd and one quarterback keeper, which was followed by a failed two-point conversion to bring the score to 22-7 with 7:07 remaining in the half.  The Naughts followed up with a LRHS turnover on their own one-yard line, Dumas carried for one with 6:02 on the clock, bringing the score to 28-7 after a failed two-point conversion.  “It felt great to finally catch one,” John Madden said after an interception.  The turnover resulted in a 76-yard touchdown completed by De’ drick Gallishaw on a 3rd and long attempt by the Dreadnaughts.  They Naughts would miss the following two-point conversion to bring the score to 34-7 at the half.

The Naughts continued in the third with a pass by Dumas to Gallishaw for 27 yards with 7:27 remaining on the clock.  The Naughts two-point conversion was completed by Dumas for a score of 42-7.  On their final possession of the third quarter, Taylor Placides ran for 68-yards to score with 0:15 remaining on the clock.  The first Dreadnaught extra point of the night was kicked by Forrest Cunningham to bring the score to 49-7. Kicker Caleb Hough was out for the night. In the final quarter, Lake Region scored on a one-yard carry, which was followed by a completed extra point attempt to bring the score to 49-14.  The Naughts ended all scoring on the next possession with a 3rd and one touchdown by freshman Jacob Sundey, making the final score 55-14.

“I’m very proud of the o-line, they did a good job, it was a very physical game, we protected the quarterback, and Goodman protected the left side,” Coach John Flath said.   Lakeland ended the night with 489 total yards offense. Placides lead all rushers with 124-yards and Gallishaw was the leading receiver with 3 catches for 112-yards. Dumas went 5-6 for 131 yards passing.  Defense had 3 turnovers and 7 sacks, 3 of which were by Jalen Stephenson.

Lakleand is now 6-0 for the season, 2-0 in their district. The Naughts go on to play their homecoming game next week against Miami Hialieah Lakes.
