In recent years, the game has been a rivalry in name only.
During the past four seasons, Lakeland has kept Lake Gibson scoreless and defeated the Braves by an average of 43.25 points per game. Lake Gibson last scored in a game against the Dreadnaughts, which the Braves also lost, on September 26, 2022.
Last Friday at Virgil Ramage Stadium was more of the same for the Dreadnaughts as they scalped the Braves, 40-0.
The beatdown began early as Lakeland amassed four scores in the first quarter and cruised to a Class 5A, District 6 victory.
Lakeland’s defense crushed Lake Gibson’s offense by holding them to a measly 69 yards of total offense, including two (2) defensive touchdowns, double-digit tackles for loss, four (4) sacks and four (4) turnovers. Ty’Quez Green (listed as an OL/TE) and Travoris Black (DB) recovered fumbles and scored that helped Lakeland build a 26-0 first quarter lead. Deonte Fielder (DB) and Ahmaad Watts (DB) displayed their ball-hawking skills by snagging interceptions during the game.
Kelin Hendrix (QB) continued his maturation process leading the Dreadnaught offense. He completed six (6) of 12 passes for 160 yards, including an outstanding 71-yard connection with Joseph Howard (WR). Kelin also added 35 yards rushing and a 1-yard touchdown.
Lakeland’s running game was steady throughout the contest. The Dreadnaughts rushed 34 times for 200 yards. Kevin Hendrix (RB) led all players with six (6) carries for 70 yards, including a 59-yard jaunt on the game’s first play. Ja’darious Dobie (RB) returned from injury and rushed eight (8) times for 41 yards. Ahnarri Cooper (QB) contributed by rushing six (6) times for 32 yards.
Lakeland returns to Bryant Stadium to face the Sumner Stingrays on October 3rd. Kickoff is set for 7:30 PM. The game is only the second home game for Lakeland, but the beginning of a five-game home field advantage that will end the regular season. The Stingrays sit at 5-1, most recently defeating Plant City, 44-21.
