Passing the Kowboys
by Jordan Thurn
“I’m proud of you guys, you worked hard,” Coach Bill Castle said in the huddle after Lakelands Regional Semifinal win against the Osceola Kowboys 20-7.
Osceola was the first on the board with five seconds remaining in the first quarter with a 33-yard carry by the Kowboys’ Stafon McCray. The following kick was good, putting the Naughts’ behind 0-7 at the end of the first quarter. Forrest Cunningham capped the Naughts’ following 12-play drive with a 4-yard carry to score, tying the game 7-7 with 6:08 left on the clock. On Lakelands’ following possession Raheeme Dumas passed to Erick Andre for 20-yards and a touchdown, ending the Naughts’ 55-yard drive with 1:56 remaining in the first half. With the Naughts’ final possession of the first half, following a fumble picked up by the defense with seconds remaining on the clock, Dumas passed 12 yards to Ricquan Southward to finish the Naughts 2-play drive; ending the half, and finishing all scoring for the night, 20-7.
The Naughts’ completed 15 first downs to the Kowboys seven. Lakeland ended the night with 291 total offensive yards; Osceola had 193. Southward lead all receivers with six catches for 68 yards. Taylor Placides lead rushing with eleven attempts for 57 yards.
“It was a hard fought win, I’m glad we worked hard all week and the coaches prepared us,” said Cunningham. Lakeland goes on to play Tampa Gaither next week at home in the Regional Finals.
