The Dreadnaughts began the Kickoff Classic against the Armwood Hawks in uncharted waters not sailed in 47 years. To say Lakeland launched a new era would be the understatement of the century. Former Dreadnaughts’ WR coach, Marvin Frazier, who assumed the reigns from legendary coach Bill Castle, led Lakeland to a 28-13 victory in his 2023 head coaching debut.
The lone first half highlight for both teams was a spectacular 51-yard touchdown run by Jordan Henderson (RB), who transferred to Lakeland after helping lead Lake Wales to a state championship last season. In evoking the ghosts of Bryant Stadium’s past, Henderson was met by multiple defenders near the line of scrimmage, broke their attempted tackles, then outraced the remainder of the Armwood defense for the score. Lakeland led 7-0 at halftime.
The Dreadnaughts’ defense, which recorded six sacks, was instrumental in ensuring a Lakeland victory, The Dreadnaughts held the Hawks to a paltry 17 yards of total offense in the first half.
The player of the game may well have been Omari Mixon (DE). As the Dreadnaught Faithful know, Mixon played on the offensive side of the ball previously. In switching positions to defensive end, the position which he is being recruited to play in college, Mixon was dominant. He registered a resounding three sacks against the Hawks.
Lakeland’s running game paced the offense on the night. Jordan Henderson (7 carries, 77 yards), including a 51-yard highlight reel score; D’Marius Rucker (10 carries, 99 yards), including a touchdown of 64 yards; and Markell Johnson (4 carries, 49 yards), including a 28-yard score; all contributed to the Dreadnaughts’ win.
The Dreadnaughts begin their regular season against the Norland Vikings (Miami) at Bryant Stadium on August 25th. Game time is 7:30 PM.
