Lakeland High School Football Dreadnaughts 5A State Champions

Lakeland opened its season in dominant fashion Friday night at Johnny Johnson Stadium, overwhelming Kathleen 47–0. The Dreadnaughts played like seasoned road warriors, while the Red Devils looked like road kill.

The Dreadnaughts stormed to a 34–0 halftime lead and, with a running clock in the second half, coasted to a decisive shutout victory.

Kelin Hendrix (QB) delivered a standout performance, throwing for 193 yards and three touchdowns while completing 80% of his passes.

Ahnarri Cooper (RB) put Lakeland on the board early with a first‑quarter touchdown. Later in the first quarter, Hendrix connected with Cam Fuse (WR) on an 86‑yard strike after a blown Kathleen coverage, a play that effectively sealed the Red Devils’ fate.

Lakeland’s defense was relentless throughout the night, preserving the shutout and even contributing to the scoring with a two‑point conversion in the second quarter. Special teams added their own highlight by recovering a fumbled punt attempt for a touchdown in the third.

The win marks Lakeland’s 13th straight victory over its crosstown rival and extends the Dreadnaughts’ all‑time series lead to 48–13.

The Dreadnaughts now turn their attention to powerhouse Venice, which visits Bryant Stadium on September 4th. The Indians, winners of four state championships, edged Rabun Gap‑Nacoochee (Georgia) 42–40 in overtime last Friday. Kickoff is set for 7:30 PM.
