Dreadnaughts Jousted By Knights, 35-34.

The Dreadnaught Faithful knew this season would be daunting with the toughest regular season schedule in recent memory and the program going through a rebuilding season. After early season losses to nationally ranked Miami Norland and St. Joseph’s Prep, the Dreadnaughts appeared to have returned to their winning ways, most games won in dominant fashion. That came to a halt last Friday at Bryant Stadium.

The Dreadnaughts began the game in commanding fashion, as they outscored the Knights 13-3 in the first quarter and 14-10 in the second quarter, to build a 27-13 halftime lead. Offensive highlights for Lakeland included Zander Smith (QB) completing touchdown passes of 18 yards and 55 yards to Pat Dennis (WR). Smith also connected with Shanard Clower (DB) on a 31-yard touchdown pass as Clower weaved his way through the Knights’ defense and outraced them to the end zone. The defense also contributed to the scoreboard as Keon Young (FS) intercepted a pass and returned it for a rousing pick-6.

The game became a battle of halves.

Clearwater International Academy outscored the Dreadnaughts 32-7 after halftime. Lakeland’s only points in the second half came on an electrifying 85-yard kickoff return by Shanard Clower. The Knights took the lead late in the game on an unforeseen play. Keyari Jones (MLB) blocked Calum Maldoon (K) on 24-yard field-goal attempt, and Christoper Cresser (CB) returned it for a touchdown. The play gave the Knights a one-point lead with 4:02 remaining in the contest, their final margin of victory.

Lakeland must regroup as crosstown rival Kathleen visits Bryant Stadium in a key matchup in 4S District 7 on Friday, October 27th. Kickoff is at 7:30 PM.
