What was once one of Polk County’s fiercest rivalries has become a one-sided affair in favor of Lakeland. The Dreadnaughts improved to 6-0 against Lake Gibson since 2022 with a 35-10 victory, extending a streak that has seen them outscore the Braves 255-24 during that span, a 38.5-point average margin of victory. Lake Gibson’s touchdown Thursday marked only the second time the Braves have reached the end zone against Lakeland in those six meetings.
Kelin Hendrix (QB) once again sparked the Dreadnaught offense with his dual-threat ability. He completed 7 of 12 passes for 132 yards and three touchdowns while adding 56 rushing yards and a score on four carries.
Three different receivers caught touchdown passes for Lakeland. Joseph Howard (WR) led the way with three receptions for 65 yards, while Rashad Kelly (WR) and Clint Anderson (WR) also found the end zone through the air.
Lakeland’s ground game contributed 108 yards and two touchdowns. Along with Hendrix, Xavion Mitchell (RB), Ahnarri Cooper (RB) and Steward Butler (RB) carried the ball for the Dreadnaughts. Cooper added a rushing touchdown to cap an efficient night for the offense.
The Dreadnaughts raced to a 35-point halftime advantage, allowing the second half to be played under a running clock. It marked yet another lopsided victory for Lakeland, which has seen only two games this season conclude without a running clock in effect.
Lake Gibson avoided being shut out of the end zone when Caleb McFarlane (QB) connected with Raymond Diaz (RB) on a 12-yard touchdown pass with less than three minutes remaining.
Lakeland will close out the regular season next Friday at Bryant Stadium against First Academy. The Royals enter the matchup with a 7-1 record after a 42-20 win over Ambassador Christian. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
