Winning against the Winter Haven Blue Devils, 28-7, the Naughts advanced their season record to 2-0. “This is the best I’ve seen us play all year long. We had less penalties everybody was together, we had less mistakes and we played hard.” senior offensive lineman, Devonte Mackey said.
With 4:27 standing in the first quarter, Aaron Johnson carried the ball 14 yards on a quarterback keeper to compete the Naughts drive. Zack Feddeler made the extra point to give the Naughts a lead of 7-0. Two possessions later, the Naughts completed a 13 play; 75-yard drive with 4:03 left in the first half. On a fourth and six attempt, Johnson capped the drive when he ran in another quarterback keeper from the 12, Feddleler’s extra point was good, and the Naughts walked off the field at half with a lead of 14-0.
Their first possession of the second half, Winter Haven went for a second and ten pass attempt, which was intercepted by Lakeland’s Kelvin Broome. Broome ran the ball back to Winter Haven’s 15-yard line. The Naughts offense would complete Broome’s attempts with a four-play 15-yard drive, completed by a one yard power play by Ra’Don Dwight. The extra point was good, and the Naughts furthered their lead to 21-0. Winter Haven would respond with 8:45 left in the fourth quarter when their quarterback, Darian Miles passed the ball to Tekedrick Roberson from eight-yards out, moving the score to 21-7. On their next possession, the Naughts would score on a second and four attempt from their 24-yard line when Johnson connected with Anthony Davis on a pass to bring up the final score of 28-7 after a completed field goal. Jacquan Foster would thwart Winter Haven’s final attempts with an interception to end the game.
“I feel like we’ve improved, the defense had some turnovers, and the offense got the ball in (the end zone). We plan to get better, we have some things to work on but by next week we should have everything down,” senior defensive end, Sherby Saimplice said.
Lakeland had 239 total offensive yards for the night, as compared to Winter Haven’s 198. Feddeler completed 4-4 field goals for the Naughts. Dwight led the Naughts with rushing, gaining 56 yards in 13 attempts.
“That’s a great team win, we had a lot of guys in on that one,” Coach Bill Castle said in the huddle after the game.
The Naughts move on to face the Lyman Greyhounds next week at home.
