Lakeland beats Lyman 25-15
by Jordan Thurn
Beating the Lyman Greyhounds 25-15, the Naughts’ improved their record to 3-0 after a night plagued with injury. “The injuries are terrible, we hate to see that, we have great kids, but we have guys who are going to step up and fill the gap,” offensive line coach, Kevin Farkas said. This season, several starters, including middle linebacker, Buzz Williams, have been taken out of play by injuries suffered on the field.
Lyman started out strong, scoring on their first possession of the game with 6:35 left in the first quarter on a first and goal attempt from the three, holding a lead over the Naughts, 0-7. Lakeland would come back their following possession when Ra’Don Dwight carried the ball the needed two and a half yards to cap the Naughts drive that went ten plays for 52 yards. Dwight would finish off the Naughts scoring attempts with a two-point conversion, giving the Naughts the lead, 8-7 with 1:18 left in the first quarter.
To start the Naughts scoring second quarter, Zack Feddeler punted on a fourth and six attempt that would land on the Lyman 2 yard line. The Greyhounds would fumble on their first down, turning the ball over to Lakeland’s Kelvin Broome to score a defensive touchdown with 10:29 left in the second quarter, giving the Naughts the lead, 15-7. Lyman retaliated on their following possession, scoring on a first and goal attempt from inches outside of the end zone. Their following two-point conversion was good and they tied the Naughts, 15-15 with 5:21 left in the half.
Lakeland’s center, Chase Madden, suffered a knee injury that took him out of the game at the end of the second quarter, forcing Seth Roy to fill in his place. “Everybody has to just step up into the position and just do what they can to help so we can win,” Dominic McNish said.
The Naughts would go on to score in the third quarter on a second and five attempt from the Greyhounds’ 8 yard line when Aaron Johnson connected with Trenton Pearson, who scored his first varsity touchdown, to give the Naughts the lead, 22-15.
“I was exhausted, as soon as I scored, my body just gave out. [The touchdown] felt amazing,” Pearson said.
Feddeler would put the Naughts final points on the board when he kicked the ball 41 yards for a field goal with 7:21 left in the game, posting the final score of 25-15.
Johnson led all rushing for the Naughts, gaining 64 yards in their favor in 10 attempts. Xavier Spann received 4 passes for a total of 53-offensive yards. The Naughts would post 241 yards of total offense, as compared to the Greyhounds’ 196.
Lakeland goes on to play a district game against the 2-1 Haines City Hornets in their first away game next week.
